چکیده

In surface electromyography (surface EMG, or S-EMG), conduction velocity (CV) refers to the velocity at which the motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) propagate along the muscle fibers, during contractions. The CV is related to the type and diameter of the muscle fibers, ion concentration, pH, and firing rate of the motor units (MUs). The CV can be used in the evaluation of contractile properties of MUs, and of muscle fatigue. The most popular methods for CV estimation are those based on maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). This work proposes an algorithm for estimating CV from S-EMG signals, using digital image processing techniques. The proposed approach is demonstrated and evaluated, using both simulated and experimentally-acquired multichannel S-EMG signals. We show that the proposed algorithm is as precise and accurate as the MLE method in typical conditions of noise and CV. The proposed method is not susceptible to errors associated with MUAP propagation direction or inadequate initialization parameters, which are common with the MLE algorithm. Image processing -based approaches may be useful in S-EMG analysis to extract different physiological parameters from multichannel S-EMG signals. Other new methods based on image processing could also be developed to help solving other tasks in EMG analysis, such as estimation of the CV for individual MUs, localization and tracking of innervation zones, and study of MU recruitment strategies.

Can Wavelet Denoising Improve Motor Unit Potential Template Estimation?

Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from a contracted muscle contain valuable information on its activity and health status. Much of this information lies in motor unit potentials (MUPs) of its motor units (MUs), collected during the muscle contraction. Hence, accurate estimation of a MUP template for each MU is crucial. Objective: To investigate the possibility of improv...

Effect of temperature on spike-triggered average torque and electrophysiological properties of low-threshold motor units.

The aim of the study was to jointly analyze temperature-induced changes in low-threshold single motor unit twitch torque and action potential properties. Joint torque, multichannel surface, and intramuscular electromyographic signals were recorded from the tibialis anterior muscle of 12 subjects who were instructed to identify the activity of a target motor unit using intramuscular electromyogr...

A Study on Muscle Fiber Number Estimation of ADM Muscle using Computer Simulation

This study suggested a new method to estimate muscle fiber number of ADM (abductor digiti minimi) muscle using surface electromyogram and muscle modeling. For muscle fiber number estimation, this study detected SMUAP (single motor unit action potential) by inducing the voluntary contraction of ADM muscle with less than 1% MVC (maximum voluntary contraction). The muscle fiber number was estimate...

Adjustments differ among low-threshold motor units during intermittent, isometric contractions.

We investigated the changes in muscle fiber conduction velocity, recruitment and derecruitment thresholds, and discharge rate of low-threshold motor units during a series of ramp contractions. The aim was to compare the adjustments in motor unit activity relative to the duration that each motor unit was active during the task. Multichannel surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded f...

Optimal Spatial Filtering for CV Estimation

 Abstract— Muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) can be estimated by the application of a pair of spatial filters to surface EMG signals and compensation of the spatial filter transfer function with equivalent temporal filters. This method integrates the selection of the spatial filters for signal detection to the estimation of CV. Using this approach, in this study we propose a novel techniqu...
